Biosketch: Dr. Miranda Rocksen

I work at the Department of Pedagogical, Curricular and Professional Studies and I hold a Ph. D. in subject matter education. My research concerns classroom interaction and the use of video-analytical methods. The primary focus of interest is in establishing and understanding how patterns of interaction in the classroom are related to the teaching and learning. I study such aspects as differences in temporality, positions and movements, word use, and the development of topics in video-recorded classroom materials. I approach the classroom as an arena for communication and for this purpose a theoretical framing in dialogical theories of communication has been useful. The results contribute for example to the understandings of how communication is coordinated and topical progression is achieved in classroom practices.
