Martin Göthberg has a teaching background in arts education and language education at upper secondary school and in adult education. He has also directed community theatre. Starting doctoral studies in September 2012 he is interested in student learning within theatre education. In parallel with doctoral studies he continued to teach Swedish and Theatre till December 2015, when he defended his licentiate thesis. Currently he is moving forward this work into a doctoral thesis with attention to how student text understanding is developed using the resources of theatrical communication. The thesis project includes ethnographic observation of a yearlong theatre production, lasting from the first encounter with a drama text to the final performance. Of certain interest is how text understanding is established related to ‘in-role’ experiences within a collectively created imagined space-time of a drama world. One focus is to explore in what ways the sociocultural notion of perezhivanie (‘lived-through-experiences’) may provide insights into transformative learning.
Since September 2016 Martin is a full-time PhD student at the Department of Education, Communication and Learning, Faculty of Education, University of Gothenburg, within the framework of the Centre for Education Science and Teacher Research (CUL).
