Biosketch: Leona Bunting

Leona started as a PhD student at the Department of Applied Information Technology within the framework of the Center for Educational Science and Teacher Research (CUL) in September 2012. She has a background in language education (M.A. and M.Ed.) and has worked as a language teacher in English and Russian in upper secondary school and as a lecturer in teacher education at University West. Leona’s research interests concern the ubiquity of English in Sweden and its pervasiveness in especially young people's lives. Many young Swedes use and learn English in out-of-school contexts, for example when watching TV and video clips and playing computer games online. Leona's research interest thus more specifically involves the relationship between what pre-teens do with English out of school when they engage in interest-driven activities linked to new media and what they do with English in school. It also involves how teachers handle the students' out-of-school engagement with English in the classroom and what interactions occur between the students and teacher when out-of-school content and resources are brought into a school environment.
