Jan is professor at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science at the University of Borås (SSLIS). He finished his PhD thesis in 1995 within theory of science and became docent in 2007. He has held a tenured position at SSLIS since 2000. Initially, his research interests focused cultural policy research and he was the director of the centre for Cultural Policy Research at SSLIS 2001-2004. His research has thereafter been inclined toward social, political and societal issues relating to the Internet, specifically social media.
Jan has been involved in the BIKT- project headed by Professor Louise Limberg, working on markup as a prerequisite for online learning. He has an interest in social media, information ethics and theory of professions. He is currently working with a project concerning changes in information practices after Sweden adopted the European IPRED legislation, and another project concerning organizational change following implementation of portal server technology. He is research leader for the research theme on social media studies at SSLIS which currently is funded as a strategic program at the University of Borås.
