I have a background in cognitive science and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Education. My thesis project is about the use of simulators in maritime training, which is an illustrative and paradigmatic example of how the introduction of high-end technologies and international standards for training creates new challenges for educators. In the thesis, the instructors’ work in simulator-based maritime training in terms of how the socio-technical environment are used as resources for instruction to facilitate the students’ learning of professional knowledge is analysed in three different studies. The overall aim is to contribute with empirically grounded knowledge regarding the use of simulators in maritime training that have the potential to develop the instructional practices in simulator-based learning environments. The thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork as well as detailed video analysis of interactions during simulation-based training sessions and adopts theories that situate cognition and learning in the material world of socially and culturally constituted interactions.
The project is a result of a collaboration between the Department of Shipping and Marine Technology at Chalmers University of Technology and the Department of Education, Communication and Learning at University of Gothenburg. I am also a member of The University of Gothenburg Learning and Media Technology Studio (LETStudio) and The Linnaeus Centre for Research on Learning, Interaction and Mediated Communication in Contemporary Society (LinCS).
