Biosketch: Janna Meyer-Beining

Janna Meyer-Beining is a PhD student in Education at the Department of Education, Communication and Learning (IPKL) at the University of Gothenburg. With a background in literature and second language education (M.A., Leipzig University, Germany), she is particularly interested in the complex role of writing in higher education, and is currently working on a project that is concerned with understanding the relationship between talk and text in relation to student writing in academia. Specifically, she is looking at the processes involved in negotiating purpose and quality of writing in the context of a writing-intensive course in second-cycle environmental engineering through a socio-cultural lens: how do teachers and students establish the meaning of academic writing tasks in interaction, what is the role of conceptual and material tools in these interactional situations, and how do student texts change as a result of such intense negotiation.
