Biosketch: Professor Hans Rystedt

Hans Rystedt is Professor in Education. In his research he investigates the relation between technological advancements and the transformation of professional knowledge. Of particular interest are questions concerning how to bridge the gap between formal education and the competences needed in professional activities. This broad issue is mainly addressed in two ways. Firstly, by making empirical investigations of how different realms of experience and activities are mediated by simulations and other kinds of information technologies in educational settings. Secondly, by exploring how the use of modern information systems and imaging technologies transform the ways in which professionals construe and deal with problems in everyday work.

Current research activities/projects

Rystedt is currently working in several inter-disciplinary research projects:

  • Learning in virtual healthcare environments: visualisation, virtual patients and full-scale simulation, investigates how pre-clinical and clinical parts of healthcare education be bridged through the use of visualisation and how instruction can be designed to promote interprofessional learning in and through full-scale simulations.
  • Simulations in educating for the professions, studies of training and assessment in simulation-based learning environments in healthcare and maritime operations.
