Rita Foss Lindblad (b. 1953) got her Ph.D. in Theory of Science at the University of Gothenburg in 1997 and has ever since been interested in exploring the social organisation of knowledge and learning in present societies. This includes a special interest in its political dimensions, where issues of gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality are important, as are issues of policies, educational systems and epistemic configurations inside as well as outside the formal terrains of education. Over the years this has led her research in different directions; into the fields of higher education, formal education and adult education and into issues of lifelong learning, of professionalism and of the social embeddings of knowledge and learning. She is a member of the POP research group (Pedagogy and Education) at the department of Education at University of Gothenburg and she has coordinated, as well as being a partaker of, a number of research projects. Her teaching experiences include courses on methodology, theoretical traditions, gender, globalisation and the institutional and spatial organisation of educational knowledge.
Today her research focus is on higher education and lifelong-learning on the one hand and professionalism on the other hand. The interest for exploring both themes is motivated by their actuality and their complex linking's to the politics of education. In one research project this means a study of "the professional turn" in European Ph.D education, in another it means a study of the world-wide "travelling" of educational ideas and policies.
